History and organization

Founded in 1871 as part of the Faculty of Sciences at the University of Strasbourg, the Strasbourg Institute of Chemistry has undergone several transformations throughout its history. Initially located on Goethe Street, in the heart of the Wilhelmian campus during the German era, the Institute moved in 1964 to the Chemistry Tower located on the modern campus. Since 2015, all research groups are located in renovated laboratories in the Institut Le Bel, 4 rue Blaise Pascal. The Strasbourg Institute of Chemistry (UMR 7177) is a multidisciplinary joint research unit in molecular chemistry associated with the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (CNRS) and the University of Strasbourg. The research carried out by around twenty teams brings together theoretical chemists, synthetic chemists, spectroscopists and biologists.

The Institute expands the frontiers of knowledge in the field of chemistry and aims to respond to fundamental and applied challenges. Supported by the University of Strasbourg and the CNRS, but also by French Research Agency (ANR) programs and European funding, the Strasbourg Institute of Chemistry is a leading research and training institution in the field of chemistry at the regional, national and international levels. To fulfill its objectives, the institute relies on excellence programs (IdEx, LabEx (ITI), Regional (Grand-Est) funding) and a Research Federation (UAR 2042 formerly FR 2010) which offers an extremely efficient characterization platform that is almost unique in France.

Owing to its essential role in training young scientists in research, the Institute is involved at several levels in the management of seven Master's programs (listed below), the Graduate School of Research and the doctoral school of chemical sciences of the University of Strasbourg (EDSC 222).

  • Molecular and Supramolecular Chemistry
  • Chemoinformatics
  • In Silico Drug Design
  • Analytical Sciences
  • Green Chemistry
  • Physical and Chemical Sciences
  • Physical Chemistry of Interfaces

The dynamism of the Strasbourg Institute of Chemistry is reflected in the abundant dissemination of its work, the search for partnerships and the desire to communicate as widely as possible.
